"John MacMurchy is a fleet, accomplished reedman with a knack for writing and arranging. He's backed on a session highlighting six of his compositions by particularly adept colleagues — pianist Robby Botos, elegant guitarist Joey Golsdstein and the reliable, imaginative pulse duo of Victor Bateman and drummer Bob McLaren. The tunes allow plenty of space to stretch and the versatile MacMurchy shows he's also a talent on alto sax (a rhapsodic, intense "Through The Looking Glass") and perkily cool clarinet ("Bayview Extension") as well as his preferred tenor instrument. The opening titler is a tense blast, "Top Dead-Centre" a relaxed showcase for laid-back soloing of quality, while the punchy "Intruder Alert" with extra horns in tow such as Perry White and Bob Brough has smart, fat moments. "No More Victims" just zips".
